18 ACTIVITIES TO HELP WITH WINTER DEPRESSION

Do you have trouble waking up? Finding that you are tired during the day? Are you eating more than usual? You might have winter depression.

Winter depression goes under a number of names: winter blues, seasonal depression, or it’s more severe counterpart, seasonal affective disorder or SADS for short.

This usually starts occurring in late autumn and there are several reasons why it can happen to you.

  • changes in your brain chemicals
  • changes to the ions in the air
  • genetics

There are many ways you can battle this form of depression.  Some are tried and true and some are currently under study by scientists.

  1. Exposure to light

Many individuals feel better after exposure to bright light. There are several ways this can be done.

  • You can go for a walk outside on a sunny day.
  • You can buy a special light bank for winter depression or
  • You can sit under a 300-watt bulb
  1. You can use ion therapy

It has been shown that the ions are less in winter.

  1. Exercise
  2. Supplements such as tryptophan (not to be used by individuals with heart problems)  or a low dose of melatonin in the afternoon
  3. Increase your protein intake
  4. Plan a vacation
  5. Keep a mood log
  6. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones
  7. Decrease your exposure to depressing news
  8. Read inspiring stories
  9. Watch movies with positive outcomes
  10. Help another individual
  11. Take up a new hobby
  12. Get out and see your friends and family
  13. Keep warm, as being cold makes some people depressed
  14. Join a support group
  15. Listen to happy music
  16. Get a dawn simulator

If you have tried some of the above and still do not feel better, you might have Seasonal Affective Disorder. This can turn into something severe and should be looked at by a medical professional.  Do not dismiss this.  Be strong and get help if you need it. You are not alone, this happens to many people. Always remember, be good to yourself. Listen to your mind, body, and soul, it has a wisdom of its own. It is not wrong or does it make you less of a person if you are suffering from the blues.
